Fence Repair After Winter Storms

Following the recent spate of winter storms it is worth checking your fences for any signs of damage, as a quick repair now may save replacing it in due course. Repairing a fence can be a daunting task, but with the right tools and knowledge, it can be done efficiently. Here are some general steps that you can follow to repair your fence:

  1. Assess the damage: Check the extent of the damage to your fence as soon as it is safe to do so. If the damage is minor, you may be able to fix it yourself. However, if the damage is severe, you may need to seek further guidance from us or your preferred installer as the fence may need replacing, rather than just a repair.
  2. Gather the necessary tools: You will need a pry bar, pliers, a saw, a hammer, nails, and replacement wood. Determine whether you need another pair of hands to help you with the repairs required, it may not be a one-man job!
  3. Remove the damaged parts: Use the pry bar to remove the damaged parts of the fence. Remove any nails using pliers.
  4. Measure the damaged area: Take measurements of the damaged area so that you know how much replacement wood you need to buy, which may be posts, rails, boards or fence panels.
  5. Replace the damaged parts: Once you have sourced the replacement materials then repair the damaged parts with the new items by fitting them correctly in the gaps.
  6. Secure the fence: Use nails to secure the fence in place.

If you are unsure about any of these steps, it is best to consult a professional installer who should be able to visit and give advice. We can help you with measurements and find the material that suits your needs and budget.

Please note that if the fence is shared with your neighbour, it is important to discuss the repair with them and come to an agreement on how to proceed.
